From Belgium With Love

<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5;">More than 20 years ago, Hilde and Reza Leiaghat began providing Los Angeles residents with a line of curated vintage furniture and reproductions through their chain of Pom Pom Interiors stores. So popular was their style of relaxed luxury that Jennifer Lopez looked to them to design her twins’ nurseries in New York and L.A. “Our company motto has always been ‘European elegance with American comfort,’ and our home is a true reflection of that,” Hilde says.</span><br /> <div class="out" id="gallerySpaces" itemprop="articleBody" lb-context="gallery_45882175" scopeid="gallerySpaces" style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; clear: both; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin: 0px auto;"> <div class="gallery-photo-container landscape " lb-sid="26253877" objid="26253877" posid="0" style="box-sizing: border-box; overflow: hidden;"> <div class="gallery-photo reloadMe trackMe rimg" data-full="746,496" data-stnd="606,403" style="box-sizing: border-box; height: auto; margin-bottom: 15px; overflow: hidden; position: relative;"> <div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; text-decoration: none;"> <img alt="Craftsman Porch by Carolyn Reyes" class="hide-context reloadable" data-pin-no-hover="true" height="496" lb-mag="" lb-view="" src="http://st.houzz.com/fimgs/c89150a10509c25c_2951-w746-h496-b0-p0--craftsman-porch.jpg" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; cursor: -webkit-zoom-in; height: auto; vertical-align: middle; width: 746px;" width="746" /></div> <div class="space-link tiny-text" compid="more" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: white; font-size: 12px; line-height: 1.2; padding: 0px 2px; position: absolute; right: 20px; text-decoration: none; top: 9px;"> <span class="more-icon" style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: icomoon; font-size: 8px; font-weight: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: 1; line-height: 1; speak: none;"></span></div> <div class="gallery-photo-credit tiny-text" compid="credit" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: white; font-size: 12px; line-height: 1.2; overflow: hidden; position: absolute; right: 40px; text-decoration: none; text-overflow: ellipsis; top: 9px; white-space: nowrap; z-index: 2;"> <span class="pro-name" style="background-image: url(http://www.houzz.com/res/2128/pic/proShadow-middle.png); background-repeat: repeat-x; box-sizing: border-box; color: white; display: block; font-weight: bold; height: 25px; line-height: 27px; margin: 0px 19px; text-decoration: none;">Carolyn Reyes</span></div> </div> <div class="gallery-text" style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 18px;"> <div class="thBuzz" hid="26253877" style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5;"> <b style="box-sizing: border-box;">Houzz at a Glance</b><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><b style="box-sizing: border-box;">Who lives here: </b><span style="box-sizing: border-box;">Hilde and Reza Leiaghat</span><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><b style="box-sizing: border-box;">Location:</b> Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles<br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><b style="box-sizing: border-box;">Size: </b><span style="box-sizing: border-box;">1,976 square feet (183 square meters); </span>5 bedrooms, 2½ bathrooms<br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><b style="box-sizing: border-box;">Year built: </b><span style="box-sizing: border-box;">1911</span><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" />The couple’s design aesthetic can be seen from the moment you step onto the porch of their charming two-story <span style="color: #3d8901;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box; cursor: pointer;">Craftsman</span></span> home. It fits nicely over the old mantel while allowing the original Batchelder tiles to show through. The Leiaghats removed two built-in bookcases on either side of the fireplace and replaced them with a pair of matching wood and glass cabinets. An antique garden urn by the window holds driftwood gathered from a trip up the Washington coast. A wooden bowl on the mantel holds shells collected on other trips. “We love to display personal mementos throughout the house, and we often use them as props in our catalog photography,” Reza says.<br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><i style="box-sizing: border-box;">Cabinets, lamps: <span style="color: #3d8901;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box; cursor: pointer;">Noir</span></span>; coffee table, console, side table: </i><i style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="color: #3d8901;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box; cursor: pointer;">Dovetail</span></span></i></div> </div> </div> <div class="gallery-photo-container portrait " lb-sid="26253220" objid="26253220" posid="3" style="box-sizing: border-box; overflow: hidden;"> <div class="gallery-photo trackMe" style="border-right-color: transparent; border-right-style: solid; border-right-width: 20px; box-sizing: border-box; float: left; height: auto; margin-bottom: 15px; overflow: hidden; position: relative; width: 422px;"> <div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; text-decoration: none;"> <img alt="Craftsman Living Room by Carolyn Reyes" class="hide-context " data-pin-no-hover="true" height="639" lb-mag="" lb-view="" src="http://st.houzz.com/fimgs/c0e1510b0509c010_2362-w422-h639-b0-p0--craftsman-living-room.jpg" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; cursor: -webkit-zoom-in; vertical-align: middle;" width="422" /></div> <div class="space-link tiny-text" compid="more" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: white; font-size: 12px; line-height: 1.2; padding: 0px 2px; position: absolute; right: 20px; text-decoration: none; top: 9px;"> <span class="more-icon" style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: icomoon; font-size: 8px; font-weight: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: 1; line-height: 1; speak: none;"></span></div> <div class="gallery-photo-credit tiny-text" compid="credit" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: white; font-size: 12px; line-height: 1.2; overflow: hidden; position: absolute; right: 40px; text-decoration: none; text-overflow: ellipsis; top: 9px; white-space: nowrap; z-index: 2;"> <span class="pro-name" style="background-image: url(http://www.houzz.com/res/2128/pic/proShadow-middle.png); background-repeat: repeat-x; box-sizing: border-box; color: white; display: block; font-weight: bold; height: 25px; line-height: 27px; margin: 0px 19px; text-decoration: none;">Carolyn Reyes</span></div> </div> <div class="gallery-text" style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 18px;"> <div class="thBuzz" hid="26253220" style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5;"> Reza and Hilde have a passion for anything made of wood, especially handcrafted objects and toys. Dressing so many windows can be costly, though, and the couple spent almost $1,500 on hardware purchased through an upscale catalog. Dissatisfied with the quality, they decided to make their own with materials purchased from a local iron vendor. Reza, a consummate handyman who says his guilty pleasure is an afternoon at the hardware store, assembled and painted the rods himself. “It cost only about $300 to make and install rods for the whole house,” Reza says.<br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" />The olive trees do very well in the light-filled room. “We simply put them outside for a day or two each month, and they thrive,” Hilde says.</div> </div> </div> <div class="gallery-photo-container landscape " lb-sid="26254655" objid="26254655" posid="6" style="box-sizing: border-box; overflow: hidden;"> <div class="gallery-photo reloadMe trackMe rimg" data-full="746,512" data-stnd="606,416" style="box-sizing: border-box; height: auto; margin-bottom: 15px; overflow: hidden; position: relative;"> <div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; text-decoration: none;"> <img alt="Craftsman Kitchen by Carolyn Reyes" class="hide-context reloadable" data-pin-no-hover="true" height="512" lb-mag="" lb-view="" src="http://st.houzz.com/fimgs/3891a8940509c600_3883-w746-h512-b0-p0--craftsman-kitchen.jpg" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; cursor: -webkit-zoom-in; height: auto; vertical-align: middle; width: 746px;" width="746" /></div> <div class="space-link tiny-text" compid="more" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: white; font-size: 12px; line-height: 1.2; padding: 0px 2px; position: absolute; right: 20px; text-decoration: none; top: 9px;"> <span class="more-icon" style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: icomoon; font-size: 8px; font-weight: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: 1; line-height: 1; speak: none;"></span></div> <div class="gallery-photo-credit tiny-text" compid="credit" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: white; font-size: 12px; line-height: 1.2; overflow: hidden; position: absolute; right: 40px; text-decoration: none; text-overflow: ellipsis; top: 9px; white-space: nowrap; z-index: 2;"> <span class="pro-name" style="background-image: url(http://www.houzz.com/res/2128/pic/proShadow-middle.png); background-repeat: repeat-x; box-sizing: border-box; color: white; display: block; font-weight: bold; height: 25px; line-height: 27px; margin: 0px 19px; text-decoration: none;">Carolyn Reyes</span></div> </div> <div class="gallery-text" style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 18px;"> <div class="thBuzz" hid="26254655" style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5;"> The changes the couple made to the house consisted mainly of redoing the kitchen and bathrooms. The classic look of the kitchen comes from the white Carrara marble and Shaker-style custom cabinets. Knowing that marble is prone to staining, the couple opted for white Caesarstone countertops with beveled edges. “It’s practical and reasonably priced and has withstood red-wine spills and cut berries,” Hilde says. <br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><i style="box-sizing: border-box;">Breakfast nook table and benches: flea market; 11 Ways to Work With a Windowless Room

<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5;">They say you never know what you had till it’s gone, and that’s certainly true for windows. When dealing with a windowless room, you really start to miss the natural light and appreciate the openness they bring. But whether you’re planning a little corrective construction or just a quick fix, there are plenty of ways to bring that same feeling to your basement, den, kitchen and more.</span><br /> <div class="out" id="gallerySpaces" itemprop="articleBody" lb-context="gallery_46090350" scopeid="gallerySpaces" style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; clear: both; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin: 0px auto;"> <div class="gallery-photo-container landscape " lb-sid="5647720" objid="5647720" posid="0" style="box-sizing: border-box; overflow: hidden;"> <div class="gallery-photo reloadMe trackMe rimg" data-full="746,433" data-stnd="606,352" style="box-sizing: border-box; height: auto; margin-bottom: 15px; overflow: hidden; position: relative;"> <div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; text-decoration: none;"> <img alt="Beach Style Basement by Francesca Owings Interior Design" class="hide-context reloadable" data-pin-no-hover="true" height="433" lb-mag="" lb-view="" src="http://st.houzz.com/fimgs/1df10e1602308f67_3147-w746-h433-b0-p0--beach-style-basement.jpg" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; cursor: -webkit-zoom-in; height: auto; vertical-align: middle; width: 746px;" width="746" /></div> <div class="space-link tiny-text" compid="more" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: white; font-size: 12px; line-height: 1.2; padding: 0px 2px; position: absolute; right: 20px; text-decoration: none; top: 9px;"> <span class="more-icon" style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: icomoon; font-size: 8px; font-weight: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: 1; line-height: 1; speak: none;"></span></div> <div class="gallery-photo-credit tiny-text" compid="credit" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: white; font-size: 12px; line-height: 1.2; overflow: hidden; position: absolute; right: 40px; text-decoration: none; text-overflow: ellipsis; top: 9px; white-space: nowrap; z-index: 2;"> <span class="pro-name" style="background-image: url(http://www.houzz.com/res/2128/pic/proShadow-middle.png); background-repeat: repeat-x; box-sizing: border-box; color: white; display: block; font-weight: bold; height: 25px; line-height: 27px; margin: 0px 19px; text-decoration: none;">Francesca Owings Interior Design</span></div> </div> <div class="gallery-text" style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 18px;"> <div class="thBuzz" hid="5647720" style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5;"> <b style="box-sizing: border-box;">1. Mirrors. </b>Adding a large mirror to your wall is one of the first ways to simulate the effect of a window, not just for bouncing some light but also for adding a sense of depth that breaks up claustrophobic wall planes. In a space with a low-ceiling, use as large a mirror as possible, reaching close to the ceiling (but not all the way up; stop 4 to 6 inches below) to distract from the ceiling line.</div> </div> </div> <div class="gallery-photo-container landscape " lb-sid="4714032" objid="4714032" posid="1" style="box-sizing: border-box; overflow: hidden;"> <div class="gallery-photo reloadMe trackMe rimg" data-full="746,496" data-stnd="606,403" style="box-sizing: border-box; height: auto; margin-bottom: 15px; overflow: hidden; position: relative;"> <div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; text-decoration: none;"> <img alt="Transitional Basement by Rikki Snyder" class="hide-context reloadable" data-pin-no-hover="true" height="496" lb-mag="" lb-view="" src="http://st.houzz.com/fimgs/3d711be701e4838a_0386-w746-h496-b0-p0--transitional-basement.jpg" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; cursor: -webkit-zoom-in; height: auto; vertical-align: middle; width: 746px;" width="746" /></div> <div class="space-link tiny-text" compid="more" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: white; font-size: 12px; line-height: 1.2; padding: 0px 2px; position: absolute; right: 20px; text-decoration: none; top: 9px;"> <span class="more-icon" style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: icomoon; font-size: 8px; font-weight: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: 1; line-height: 1; speak: none;"></span></div> <div class="gallery-photo-credit tiny-text" compid="credit" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: white; font-size: 12px; line-height: 1.2; overflow: hidden; position: absolute; right: 40px; text-decoration: none; text-overflow: ellipsis; top: 9px; white-space: nowrap; z-index: 2;"> <span class="pro-name" style="background-image: url(http://www.houzz.com/res/2128/pic/proShadow-middle.png); background-repeat: repeat-x; box-sizing: border-box; color: white; display: block; font-weight: bold; height: 25px; line-height: 27px; margin: 0px 19px; text-decoration: none;">Rikki Snyder</span></div> </div> <div class="gallery-text" style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 18px;"> <div class="thBuzz" hid="4714032" style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5;"> <b style="box-sizing: border-box;">2. White walls. </b>White (or very pale blue) walls help simulate the fresh, full-spectrum sparkle of natural sunlight, while subtly reflecting light from every source for the brightest look possible. French doors. </b>Adding windows to a doorway (by converting to French doors) also gives the eye that sense of peeking out into a space beyond, and lets a new ambient light source in, even if the adjacent “room” is simply a pantry. Most true grasses would fare poorly in full shade. Bristleleaf sedge is a perfect low grower and, when planted en masse, mimics the lawn look in areas where lawn won’t grow. The bonus is that sedges green up earlier in spring than any lawn does. The seed heads are highly ornamental in early summer but don’t stay long. You also don’t need to mow it.<br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><b style="box-sizing: border-box;">How to use it. </b>Bristleleaf sedge is a tough plant and is perfect between stepping stones or tucked in among gaps in a stone wall. Building Permits: What to Know About Green Building and Energy Codes

Note how the flagstones are cut into the path, helping give the turf a natural and organic appearance.</span><br style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 26.6666679382324px;" /><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" />Some homeowner’s associations prohibit artificial turf. I used to roll my eyes at synthetic grass installations myself. But that sort of policy is difficult to justify today, with falling water tables, droughts and the improved look and durability of synthetic turf options.<br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><br style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 26.6666679382324px;" /><span style="box-sizing: border-box;">An assortment of landscape requirements might be required for your project. Rain sensors connected to landscape irrigation in order to automatically shut off sprinklers in case of rain are a standard guideline. Plant selections prioritizing native plants, and square footage parameters for the landscaping area, are also usually regulated in some manner.
