LYNCH / EISINGER / DESIGN took on the renovations of a 900 square foot loft apartment located in New York City’s Tribeca neighborhood, named Hubert Street Residence. The loft is for a young medical student at Columbia University who was in need of a pied-à-terre while in school. The result is a light-filled, open space with both public and private areas and plenty of storage and functionality.
All partitions were removed to open the loft up, helping to preserve both the North and West views. The architects cleverly disguised all the functional needs to live on a daily basis into a single plywood volume. The volume reaches just below the apartment’s ceiling letting daylight pass through into the private areas. It’s also raised above the floor denoting a transition between the public and private spaces.
In the main area, they installed a long, white lacquered cabinet which hides a workspace, a Murphy bed, and closets. When the cabinet doors are closed, the white spaces acts as a project screen.
The Murphy bed allows for overnight guests and the long cabinet door gives the bed extra privacy.
The volume houses the main bedroom which has a grey rubber floor and matching storage cabinets. One of the cabinet doors is painted a bright orange.
